The Japanese could be satisfied with the outcome of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 - both the first and second Russian Pacific squadrons were completely defeated by the combined Japanese fleet. In the Russo-Japanese War, armored cruisers were used by the Japanese to support battleship squadrons in numerous clashes with the Russian fleet. Based on the experience of the war, the Japanese navy leadership planned to arm their line ships with heavier artillery and provide them with a higher speed than similar class ships of likely opponents. The emergence of such line ships also required the creation of more powerful armored cruisers capable of operating in conjunction with them. However, the superiority that the newest Japanese armored cruisers had over their counterparts built in other countries before and after the war, was destroyed in one fell swoop by the appearance of a truly revolutionary ship - the line cruiser "Invincible".
From that moment the Japanese navy entered a difficult period of rivalry in strength and power with the British and American fleets. In this confrontation, a special role was played by line cruisers of the "Kongo" type. In the subsequent war in the Pacific Ocean, they shared the fate of the Japanese Empire. Line cruisers of the "Kongo" type were the first and last representatives of this class of ships in the Japanese Navy.
