In the history of shipbuilding battleships type "Maryland" entered as the last superdreadnoughts of the fleet under the "Star-Spangled Banner" and the first American battleships with 16-inch main caliber artillery. This was the response of the new superpower, the United States, to Japanese battleships of the Nagato type.
It was the construction of battleships with 16-inch main-caliber artillery that unleashed an unprecedented naval arms race, the overwhelming burden of which led to the convening of the first international conferences on limiting naval armaments and the signing of the Washington and London Agreements.
The agreements brought to life the "Washington" cruisers and battleships, which remained in the history of shipbuilding as desperate attempts to find a technical solution within the constraints caused by political and economic reasons.
A separate section is devoted to the evolution of American dreadnoughts, superdreadnoughts, and line cruisers, including the never built South Dakota battleships and Lexington line cruisers.
