The book by the famous modern Orthodox theologian and patrologist Jean-Claude Larcher, "Face and Nature," is devoted to a critical analysis of the system of interpretation in personalism, applied to various areas of theology by two famous modern theologians - Metropolitan John (Zizioulas; one of the leading hierarchs of the Patriarchate of Constantinople) and Christos Yannaras. The works of these thinkers, who influenced some other theologians with their ideas, have been published in translation and are known in Russia. Jean-Claude Larcher shows in his critical study that this system of personalism, inspired by such a philosophical current as existentialism, is alien to Christianity and in all the areas of theology to which it is applied (triadology, Christology, anthropology, ecclesiology, the doctrine of the spiritual life), upsets the delicate equilibrium, the balance established by the patristic Tradition between person and nature, God and man, and leads to serious errors. In addition to its critical dimension, this book deepens the understanding of the meaning and relationship between the concepts of person and nature, essential to Christian doctrine. Jean-Claude Larcher was born in 1949 in the city of Badonvillers in north-eastern France to a Catholic family and became an Orthodox Christian at the age of 23. Formation of J.-C. Larshe’s development as a theologian occurred under the influence of his spiritual father, Archimandrite Sergius (Chevich), as well as thanks to communication with the Venerable Justin (Popovich), Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov), the disciples of Elder Joseph the Hesychast - Elders Ephraim of Katounakia and Charalampy, with Elders Ephraim of Philotheus, Joseph of Vatopedi and the Venerable Paisios of Athos.
