First published in 1927, Ludwig von Mises's "Liberalism" represented a decisive attempt to reclaim the liberal brand from the "social liberalism" in Germany and the "new liberalism" in England that had appropriated it. The book became the final part (with its implications for economic policy) of the author's project to theoretically investigate the viability of all conceivable economic systems—socialism, interventionism, and free-market economics (capitalism).
Here, for the first time, the author systematized the program of classical liberalism: from a historically developed combination of heterogeneous elements, he created an indivisible and coherent whole, in which all parts are mutually conditioned and arranged hierarchically—taking into account the latest discoveries in economic theory and sociology (largely made by the author himself).
To this day, "Liberalism" remains the only systematic exposition of the principles of a liberal social and governmental structure, the foundations of liberal economic and foreign policy. The author asserts private ownership of the means of production as the central principle of liberalism and demonstrates the close connection between the free market, international peace, civil rights and economic prosperity.
