The future German writer and entomologist Ernst Jünger (1895–1998) enlisted as a private volunteer at the outbreak of World War I, fought on the Western Front, and was wounded and decorated. In the summer of 1918, his regiment engaged in trench warfare in northern France, between Amiens and Arras, and Jünger, as a lieutenant, commanded a company defending positions near "wood 125"—its French name was Rossignol, but on German maps it was designated only by a number. His six weeks in these positions (from June 30 to August 10) are the subject of "Chronicle of Trench Fighting 1918," first published in 1925. It captures how a man lives at the very limits of his capabilities, turning these limits into daily practice. This is neither a memoir nor a mere literary adaptation of frontline records. The text represents a complex process of material transformation: from rough trench notes taken under artillery fire to a carefully constructed narrative structure, where episodes are subordinated not so much to a direct chronology as to an internal logic of rising and falling tension.
