Most publications about Leonardo da Vinci's (1452–1519) machines are limited to facsimiles or simplified illustrations, which can be completely incomprehensible to the uninitiated. This book relies on precise virtual 3D models created according to the principles of modern engineering design using techniques similar to CAD modeling. This allows the author to not only show what the machine looked like, but also explain how it worked!
Also widespread are publications attributing inventions to Leonardo that he did not create (the helicopter, the bicycle, the modern tank, etc.). Mario Taddei's book is scientifically reliable. The author:
- clearly distinguishes between what Leonardo copied, improved, and actually invented;
- relies on comparative analysis with the works of Valturio, Francesco di Giorgio, and Taccola;
- debunks popular myths (for example, about the "Vinciana tank" being a combat vehicle).
For the first time in global practice, the expert offers realistic reconstructions of such complex mechanisms as:
- an automatic loading system for crossbows;
- a multi-barreled circumfolgore;
- a flying ornithopter with biomechanical controls;
- an android with a hydraulic drive.
These reconstructions are based on a comparison of disparate records from various codices, representing the archaeology of Vinciano lore—a method that is largely absent from Russian literature.
