The third volume of Vladimir Nabokov's celebrated American Lectures on Literature comprises a course on Cervantes's Don Quixote, delivered at Harvard University in 1951–1952. Nabokov prepared this course with particular care—not only because he was invited to America's most prestigious university, but also because of his preconceived notions of the book—an notion that could be described as an explosive mixture of admiration and distaste. This makes his detailed analysis of the novel, his captivating excursions into literary history, his references to popular culture, and the way he picks up and develops the thoughts and opinions on art, society, ethics, and the craft of writing presented in the previous two volumes all the more engaging.
This edition reproduces the full set of Nabokov's illustrations and drawings, selected by F. Bowers from archival materials, and is accompanied by a foreword by Guy Davenport, notes, and editorial commentary. The translations have been re-checked against the original, and some of the lectures are being published in new translations.
