Light cruisers of the Dido type were specially designed as the basis for air defense of the Royal Navy formations. They were the first British cruisers to receive universal artillery of the main caliber (133-mm guns in five twin turrets), control of anti-aircraft fire with the help of PUASO with power gyro-stabilization and radar guidance in range, altitude, azimuth. When approving the names of the next series of cruisers, the Admiralty decided to continue the tradition of naming ships of this class after heroes of ancient and medieval history and mythology (thus emphasizing the continuity with the predecessors, cruisers such as "Leander" and "Areteuse"). Thus, from the slipway came down "Cleopatra", "Hermione", "Phebus", "Argonaut", "Charybdis", "Scylla", "Black Prince", etc., and the whole type was named in honor of Didona - the legendary founder of Carthage. A total of 16 cruisers of this class were built, which actively participated in combat operations in all theaters of World War II, where their main task was the protection of Allied convoys (including the USSR). "Naiada" and "Hermione" were sunk by Kriegsmarine submarines, "Bonaventura" was sunk by an Italian submarine, "Charybdis" by a German destroyer, and "Spartan" became the victim of the world's first radio-controlled planned aerial bomb. The longest service of the "Diadem", which was in the Pakistan Navy until 1985. The new book by a leading naval historian for the first time in all details tells about the design, construction, construction, testing, modernization, service and combat use of all light air defense cruisers of the type "Dido". The edition is illustrated with exclusive drawings and unique photographs.
