The name of Count Karl Vasilyevich V. Nesselrode, who headed the Russian Foreign Ministry for forty years and more than sixty years in public service, is associated with a whole epoch in the history of foreign policy of the Russian Empire. It was a time of unprecedented prestige of Russia in the international arena. Meanwhile, back in the XIX century in the public consciousness formed an almost caricatured image of Nesselrode as a "dwarf" and "weasel", "unprecedented coward", "traitor-German", consistently betraying Russian interests. It seems that such a very one-sided and biased view needs serious reassessment.

On the pages of this book - based primarily on the extensive epistolary heritage of Count Nesselrode - an attempt is made to free his image from many years of stereotypical layers. He is shown as a statesman who not only built a brilliant career (from a midshipman in the Russian Navy to the State Chancellor of the Russian Empire), but also contributed to Russia's foreign policy successes.
