Walter Scott (1771–1832) was a Scottish writer, poet, translator, and lawyer. In 1823, his brilliant historical novel Quentin Durward was first published in London. It is a gripping story of friendship, love, adventure, duty, and courage. The translation of the novel presented in this edition was done by Maria Andreyevna Shishmareva (1852–1939). The book is decorated with illustrations by four talented French artists, masters of their craft: Adrien Emmanuel Marie (1848–1891), Edouard Riou (1833–1900), Frederic Theodore Lix (1830–1897), and Henri Scott (1849–1884). The writer published his first such texts under a pseudonym, thus maintaining anonymity until 1827. Among them is the novel Quentin Durward, first published in 1823. Its main character is a young Scottish nobleman who, through carelessness, gets caught up in the maelstrom of political intrigue. The events of the novel unfold in 15th-century France. Incredible adventures, brutal battles, and first love await young Quentin. The text of the work in this edition is supplemented by detailed notes and elegant, detailed images that capture the characters and reliably demonstrate the costumes, interiors, and landscapes of medieval Europe.
