A work set in the colorful world of the slums of Monterey, California, in the 1930s.

The reader will meet some very unusual characters, descendants of Native Americans, Mexicans, and Americans. They primarily make their living through petty theft, illegal scams, and often end up behind bars. Yet, despite this, the reader somehow feels sympathy for them. Their rough manners are combined with lofty aspirations, their penchant for hypocrisy turns into touching simplicity, and their cunning and roguery suddenly give way to selflessness and selflessness.

Steinbeck himself, in the preface to Tortilla Flat, wrote of his characters: "These are all people I know and love; people who adapt themselves admirably to their surroundings." This quality of human nature is called a truly philosophical attitude to life, and it is a wonderful thing.”
