A work about the colorful slum world of the California city of Monterey in the 1930s.

The reader will get acquainted with very unusual characters, descendants of Indians, Mexicans and Americans. Mostly they are engaged in petty theft, illegal scams and often find themselves behind bars. Yet, despite this, the reader somehow feels sympathy for them. Their rough manners combine with lofty aspirations, their tendency to hypocrisy turns into touching simplicity, and their cunning and deceit are suddenly replaced by selflessness and selflessness.

Steinbeck himself in the preface to "Tortilla Flat Quarter" so spoke of his characters: "All of these are people I know and love, people who perfectly adapt to the environment. This characteristic of human nature is called a truly philosophical attitude to life, and it is a beautiful thing".
