"Kuroshiwo" is the most famous work of the Japanese classic Tokutomi Roka, dedicated to the turning point in Japanese history, when after centuries of shogunate rule, power again passed to the imperial house. Feudal Japan opened up to the world, and turbulent changes began in all spheres of life. The old foundations and traditions collapsed, the samurai class became a relic of the past, their place was taken by a new elite - businessmen, capitalists, bankers. The novel has many characters that replace each other, allowing you to look at events from different angles and making the picture voluminous and polyphonic. But the central characters are people of a bygone era. Saburo Higashi, an elderly, crippled samurai, a loyal supporter of the overthrown shogunate, is not ready to come to terms with the new order, but he is not able to turn back time either. Even the war has become different. The proud old warrior is inexorably losing his last battle... Sadako, the impeccable lady of the Tokugawa era, whose manners and principles look ridiculous and out of place in the new order... These people are desperately trying to find their place in the new world.

The socio-philosophical content of "Kuroshiwo" bears clear traces of the influence of Leo Tolstoy, whose admirer and follower was Tokutomi Roka. At the same time, it is a deeply national work, written with great compassion for compatriots who were destined to live at the turn of the eras.
