In the summer of 1591, student protests against the Jesuit school at the University of Padua began. The decades following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Venice became an era of scientific discovery, cultural innovation, and moral debate. The region became a center of Catholic resistance to the expansion of papal authority, as well as a haven for publishers, who were able to publish books without church censorship. The closure of the Academy of the Unknowns, a free-thinking intellectual society, around 1660 marked the end of this era.

In his book, Edward Muir recounts how science tested religion, ideas about women's rights clashed with traditional narratives, and a new opera challenged the ethical norms of the past.
