Hélène lives in Paris, working in a pastry shop. Her boyfriend, Paul, is passionate about politics: demonstrations, struggles, and world news. He leads a full life, unlike Hélène, who can only dream and fancies, waiting for something real. Everything changes when Hélène meets Jean—now she is ready to give her heart, to lose herself completely in the man she loves. However, it seems he doesn't need her love at all... Only when the war begins and France is overrun by Nazi troops, when it is no longer possible to remain aloof from events, does Hélène finally have the opportunity to prove her true love and win his affection.

The novel "The Blood of Others," based partly on real events, was first published in 1945 and brought Simone de Beauvoir resounding success. In 1984, "The Blood of Others" was adapted for the screen by renowned French director Claude Chabrol, starring Jodie Foster.
