An outside perspective is always important, especially when it's based on a deep understanding of the subject. John Fennell devoted his entire life to the study of Russian history and culture. His book, "The Crisis of Medieval Rus'," recounts the most difficult period in our country's history, when, weakened by princely strife, it was unable to resist the Mongol invasion. Fennell attempts to understand the causes of Russian disunity that led to defeat and more than two centuries of oppression, and in his assessments, he spares no Russian princes, with Alexander Nevsky bearing the brunt. One can and should argue with Fennell, but one cannot deny his extensive knowledge and the right to draw original conclusions from Russian and other sources.
John Fennell (1918–1992) was an English Slavic historian, professor at Oxford University, and one of the leading Western experts on the history of medieval Rus'. He was married to a representative of the ancient noble family of Lopukhins and even converted to Orthodoxy.
