The brightest period in the age of chivalry was the period of the Crusades - the time of battles for the Holy Land. Having conquered Jerusalem, the Crusaders realized their dream - to free the Holy Sepulchre from the infidels and began to build the Kingdom of Heaven in Palestine, and what came out of it? Why did European monarchs, knights, the poor and children, influenced by sermons and rumors, go to the East? During the Middle Ages, Western European chivalry, inspired by the Catholic Church, traveled to Palestine to liberate the Holy Land from the Muslims, where Jesus Christ was said to have suffered. This movement came to be known as the Crusades, which became the bloodiest religious wars of the 11th and 13th centuries. The fanatical movement of Christians to the East soon transformed into a series of wars of conquest. The book by the famous historian-medievalist Mikhail Zaborov (1920-1987) fascinatingly tells the story of all the Crusades to the East. The author describes the battle of European armies with Muslims in Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, considers the reasons for the origin of the Crusader movement, the influence of the Catholic Church on it and the various forms of participation of Europeans in the campaigns, the formation of Christian states and military-monastic orders in the East. Much attention is paid to the conflicts among the Crusaders, their confrontation with the Venetians and Byzantines, the capture of Constantinople and the victors of the Crusaders - the Seljuk Turks.
