The reader is presented with Alexandre Dumas's action-packed historical novel, "The Red Sphinx" ("Le sphinx rouge"; 1866), one of whose main characters, Cardinal Richelieu, is portrayed here by the author in a completely different light than in "The Three Musketeers." This novel, also known as "The Count de More," remained unknown for many years not only in Russia but also in France: written in 1866, it was first published in Paris in 1947. At the center of the plot is the brilliant Antoine de Bourbon, Count de More, the illegitimate son of King Henry IV, a handsome, gallant cavalier, and courageous warrior. The novel is set in 1628–1630.
