Nikolai Gumilev (1886-1921) is called "the last romantic of the Silver Age." The great Russian poet, founder of the Acmeist school, was arrested on August 3, 1921, and soon after, on August 26, executed by order of the Petrograd Provincial Cheka. His life was short and vibrant, as were the lives and destinies of those around him. Gumilev's wife was the astonishingly talented poet Anna Akhmatova. This woman survived two revolutions and two wars. She endured her husband's execution, the purges, the arrests and imprisonment of her son, and artistic oblivion. One day, Anna uttered the bitter phrase: "She stole Gumilev from me." She was referring to Gumilev's new lover, Larisa Reisner. The hereditary noblewoman, who became the "Valkyrie of the Red Revolution," admitted that she, too, "loved him completely, unrequitedly." This book by renowned writer Adele Alekseeva recounts the twists and turns and secrets of these great figures who rose to prominence at the beginning of the 20th century and left their mark on history forever.
