A prominent figure in the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ali Shariati skillfully blended Shiism and socialism. His ideas laid the foundation for Islamic "liberation theology" and had a key influence on the Palestinian liberation movement and social policy in modern Iran. Shariati championed women's rights in Iran, tracing the roots of Islamic feminism to the figure of Fatima. In his interpretation, Fatima is central to the entire humanistic and enlightened tradition of Islam. The book also presents the history of Iran's leftist guerrillas (the fedayeen), who fought against the Shah's regime and later, alongside the Shiite clergy, opposed the Shah and American and Israeli imperialism. The fedayeen drew heavily on the ideas of Ali Shariati.
