The book by the Russian Egyptologist and archaeologist, senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, M. A. Lebedev, is devoted to the study of the role of the desert in the life of Egypt during the Old Kingdom (3rd millennium BC), as well as the contribution of currently deserted areas to the formation, development and crisis of the first territorial state in human history. The work examines the stages of studying the modern deserts of Egypt and Sudan, the geology of the territories surrounding the Nile Valley, ancient landscapes and climate. Written and pictorial sources traditionally used by specialists are introduced into the context of known archaeological sites. The practice and conditions for organizing royal expeditions beyond the Nile Valley are discussed, as well as the influence of the desert's riches on the economy, politics and social development of ancient Egyptian society. The monograph is aimed at specialists and students of the humanities, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the history, archeology, culture and economy of ancient states.
