US Army Colonel and military historian Professor Alfred Turney examines the complex problems of the 1941-1942 campaign in the USSR, using the war diary of Field Marshal von Bock as his primary source of information. Army Group Center, led by von Bock, one of Germany's most celebrated military leaders, was tasked with the mission of invading Central Russia and taking Moscow. For six months, despite poor roads and insufficient supplies, conflicts with Hitler and the Supreme Command of the Army, harsh weather conditions, and stubborn resistance from the Soviets, von Bock held his armies on the outskirts of Moscow. It was here, near Moscow, that Germany suffered its first and most serious defeat of the war, which sounded the death knell for the German military machine.
