One of the writer's most significant works was the fairy tale "The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors", published in 1951. The events in it unfold in the looking glass, where a girl named Olya unexpectedly finds herself. There she meets her reflection Yalo and together with her travels around the magical city, confronts evil forces and corrects her shortcomings. The story stood out sharply against the background of other children's literature of its time. It gained enormous popularity and was translated into foreign languages. Plays were staged and films were made based on it.

The charming color illustrations for the text were made by the Soviet artist Igor Leonidovich Ushakov (1926-1989). Ushakov's bright, detailed drawings perfectly convey the fairy-tale atmosphere, the dynamism of the narrative and the emotions of Gubarev's characters.
