First published in 1845, Alexandre Dumas père's (1802–1870) novel Queen Margot was the first part of his trilogy dedicated to the Huguenot wars. The novel's main character is the daughter of the French king Henry II and Catherine de Medici. Dumas's image of Margot does not always coincide with her prototype, the real Marguerite de Valois, but the novel is a joy to read. The text is translated by E. N. Lyubimova. The publication is illustrated with drawings by two French artists of the 19th century: Auguste-Hilaire Eugène Lampsonius and Dieudonné Auguste Lancelot.
