Katherine Anne Porter (1890–1980) was an American writer, journalist, and social activist, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Prize. Her life resembles a thriller. After breaking her abusive husband, Katherine tried her hand as a small-town actress and worked as a journalist—writing a theater criticism and gossip column for a small newspaper, appearing between Denver and New York, working as a ghostwriter, and writing children's stories. In Mexico, she met leftist activists and became an outspoken critic of Catholicism. She taught at Stanford, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas. Her novel Ship of Fools, published in 1962, brought her national fame, which was further cemented by Stanley Kramer's film adaptation (1965). The two-time Oscar-winning film stars A-listers Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, and Lee Marvin. Passengers on the gigantic liner "Vera" cross the ocean, bound for Europe. The journey from the past to the future seems like a golden opportunity to leave all the bad behind and solve all their problems as if by magic. People fall in love, quarrel, philosophize, and make plans for their lives. But not all of this marvelous ship's passengers find happiness and good fortune on the other side.
