The old English estate of Buckshaw is home to the last representatives of an aristocratic family - the eccentric Colonel de Luce and his three daughters. While the Colonel is feverishly looking for ways to save the family from ruin, selling off his stamp collection and family silverware, the two older daughters, Ophelia and Daphne, play Inquisition with the youngest, but Flavia has no time for games, the young detective is busy with another investigation.
This is already quite enough to go crazy, but on top of everything else, a gypsy fortune teller who has set up camp in the forest is attacked on the territory of Buckshaw, and Flavia finds another corpse - on the trident of a fountain - someone, clearly not devoid of cynicism and a sense of humor, hanged the local rogue Brookie Harewood.
The stubborn Inspector Hewitt takes on the investigation, as usual underestimating the detective talents of the ubiquitous eleven-year-old from Buckshaw. Who else but Flavia, with her persistence, intelligence and restless curiosity, will be able to connect the series of disappearances, deaths, thefts and kidnappings that have occurred in the quiet Bishop's Lacey in recent years.
