Paleontologist Ross McPhee seeks to solve the mystery of extinctions of the last 50,000 years, affecting mainly the largest animals on Earth. Among them are giant sloths, mastodons, mammoths, woolly rhinos and other representatives of the megafauna. The author considers both classical hypotheses of their extinction - as a result of climate change and extermination by humans, and new ones: disruption of food webs, hyperepidemics and invasion of the Earth's atmosphere by a celestial body 12,900 years ago. This allows us to link together a lot of paleontological and archaeological data, including those obtained from the latest research. In conclusion, McPhee talks about the possibility of restoring megafauna, talks about the successes of synthetic biology and genetic engineering - in particular, about the attempts to revive the woolly mammoth.
