The novel “Someone’s Wormwood is Sweet” (1929) belongs to the best examples of Tanizaki’s prose. This is a story about an unhappy marriage: a husband and wife have long been burdened by their bonds, but instead of breaking up and finding the freedom they want, they continue to torture themselves and each other.
However, the main interest of the novel is not in the plot collision as such, but in its very atmosphere. The lyrical principle shines through the entire fabric of the narrative, linking together the objectivity of descriptions and the subjectivity of author’s assessments, the memory of the past and the experience of the present, nature and art, life and life. The world of the novel is non-hierarchical, everything in it is equally valuable, and each particular detail is endowed with that special property, which in Japanese is called “mono-no avare” – the sad charm of things.
