A real story about humanity and honor, over which the laws of war have no power.
The year is 1940. Italy is involved in the war. After a serious injury Salvatore Todaro refuses to leave the service and undertakes to lead a submarine with a team of young submariners from different parts of Italy through Gibraltar. When on the way "Cappellini" meets a Belgian cargo ship, Todaro realizes that he must sink the enemy ship, but the law of the sea for the commander above the military. Against orders to destroy the enemy, Todaro takes on board 26 surviving sailors to bring them ashore. Thus, in a tiny enclosed space with common troubles, hopes and supplies, very different people who have long been told they are enemies are trapped.
