Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov (1907-1982) was a novelist and poet. Accused of counter-revolutionary activity in 1929, Shalamov spent three years in the Vishersky camp in the Perm region, and then, after being re-accused in 1957, was exiled to Kolyma; where he spent sixteen years. The writer mined gold in the mines, worked as a woodcutter, a digger, and mined coal. Graduating from a paramedic course, Shalamov and after the end of the term worked in the Far Eastern settlements. He could return to Moscow only in 1953.
Kolyma stories - a terrible document of the era, Shalamov's merciless prose about the Gulag, based on the circles of hell he passed in the corrective labor camps. The cycle consists of six collections of stories and essays. V.T. Shalamov insisted that it is the collections that are integral works - keeping the order in which the stories are arranged.
