Varlam Shalamov (1907-1982) was an outstanding Russian prose writer and poet who spent seventeen years in Stalin's camps. "Remember, most importantly, the camp is a negative school from the first to the last day for anyone," Shalamov wrote. - A person - neither a superior nor a prisoner - does not need to see it. But if you have seen it, you must tell the truth, no matter how terrible it is. 〈...〉 For my part, I decided long ago that I would devote the rest of my life to this very truth." "Kolyma Stories" is the main work of V. Shalamov, narrating about the life of prisoners of correctional labor camps in the 1930s-1950s. The stories were written in 1954-1973, but in the homeland of the writer, the works saw the light only after the death of the author, in the late 1980s. This edition publishes the cycle of "Kolyma Stories", as well as stories from the collections "The Left Bank", "Shovel Artist", "Sketches of the Underworld", "The Resurrection of the Larch" and "The Glove, or PK-2".
