Vladimir Karatkevich is the pride of Belarusian literature. In 2016, his work "Ears of Corn under Your Sickle" was recognized by readers as the most important book that influenced the development of Belarusians as a nation. The novel describes the formation of the Belarusian nation through the example of the noble Zagorski family. The events take place in the Mogilev and Grodno regions, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Warsaw – in peasant huts and noble estates, at student gatherings and educational institutions, in the salons and drawing rooms of high-ranking dignitaries, and on the streets of crowded cities. The book features both literary characters born of artistic imagination and real historical figures – K. Kalinowski, Z. Sierakowski, V. Dunin-Martsinkevich, S. Moniuszko, T. Shevchenko, and V. Syrokomlya.
