Heim Hochland, Bavaria, 1944. Rumors of war barely reach a remote Nazi nursing home for expectant mothers, where everything is done to shield newborns and their "pure-blooded" mothers from the events of the outside world. Young Renée, a Frenchwoman expelled by her family after falling in love with a German officer, finds refuge there while awaiting her unwanted birth. Helga, a German woman, is an exemplary nurse, responsible for caring for pregnant women and infants. Through her hands pass women with tragic fates and infants, banished from this small paradise if they do not meet the required racial criteria. Regularly confronted with such cruelty, Helga begins to doubt her actions—the world she once thought perfect is crumbling, and the cozy refuge is becoming a trap. What will become of them all when war arrives?

A dramatic novel based on true events about a little-known chapter of World War II, about how the Nazis built a system of incubators to "produce" racially flawless children.
