150 years ago, newspapers in the Russian Empire wrote about yet another campaign in Central Asia, intended to demonstrate to Russian society and the world the might of Russian arms, the decisiveness of Russian rule, and its civilizing mission. The campaign against the Kokand Khanate in 1875–1876 ended in victory: the enemy, declared barbarians, was defeated, the victors were showered with rewards, and the empire gained vast territories and at least a million new subjects. However, before the smoke had cleared, the country forgot about it—the Russo-Turkish War had begun, dreams of India were replaced by dreams of Constantinople, and the Kokand campaign remained a half-forgotten episode in Russian history. Using both published and archival materials, as well as memoirs, Sergei Abashin recounts the main stages and events of the campaign, giving voice to leading imperial officials and rank-and-file officers, as well as the opposing side, Kokand, to answer the following questions: Why was the Russian Empire so determined to conquer Central Asia? Who, and how, made the decision to launch new campaigns and annex lands that were culturally and geographically distant? And why were the events of 1875–1876 in Central Asia hushed up or forgotten during both the imperial and Soviet eras? Sergei Abashin, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor in the Faculty of Anthropology at the European University at St. Petersburg.
