Svetlana Pletneva's book is dedicated to the nomadic peoples who lived in the southern Russian steppes for nearly a thousand years, from the Hunnic invasion in the 4th century to the arrival of the Mongols in the 13th century. Drawing primarily on archaeological material and the writings of early medieval writers, it recounts the migrations of these steppe peoples, their way of life, beliefs, customs, and rituals, their contacts with sedentary peoples, and the traces they left behind in what is now southern Russia and Ukraine. Using examples of artifacts found by archaeologists in nomadic burials, Svetlana Pletneva demonstrates how the Hunnic era, which gave birth to numerous steppe hordes, was replaced by the Khazars, and how the Khazars were succeeded by the Pechenegs and Tork-Guzes, only to cede the steppe to the Polovtsians, who were later dispersed and absorbed by the Mongol invasion. Svetlana Pletneva is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, and a distinguished specialist in the archaeology, history, and culture of medieval nomads.
