The books contain all parts of the acclaimed magical tetralogy The Books of the New Sun, The Executioner's Shadow, The Peacemaker's Claw, The Sword of the Lictor, and The Citadel of the Autarch.
The Executioner's Shadow tells the story of Severian, an apprentice to the Executioner's Guild and an apprentice to the Order of the Seekers of Truth and Repentance in the strange decadent world of Urd. He is cast out for the worst transgression in his profession - compassion for the victim.
In The Peacemaker's Claw, Severian continues to search for his purpose. Is it connected to an ancient relic that supposedly has mythical powers? Is Severian destined to play a role in the political intrigues of the sovereign of Urd? Or will a different fate await the executioner's apprentice?
In The Sword of the Lictor, Severian, who has become the lictor of the city of Thrax, again violates his duty as executioner and arranges the escape of the woman he was supposed to kill. He is forced to flee to the north of the Commonwealth, into the mountains, pursued by the guards of Thrax and monsters inflicted by his old enemies. War is raging in the north, with the forces of the Autarch fighting an army of Ascians.
In The Citadel of Autarch, Severian's story is nearing its finale. He will discover the source of the Peacemaker's Claw's powers and learn the nature of the Autarch. Severian will return to Ness, to the Citadel, to his teachers, but in a new capacity. Will the former executioner become the New Sun?
