First published fifty years after the death of the author, The Book of Unrest is a unique collection of aphoristic statements that make up the autobiography of Bernardo Soares, an assistant accountant in the city of Lisbon, one of the alternative personalities of Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). This “autobiography without facts” is the prose of the poet or poetry in prose, the deeply lyrical reflections of the philosopher, the verbal painting of the artist who sees through a transparent surface for him the very essence of things.

The Book of Unrest is intended, by hypnotizing the reader, to introduce him into the very heart of that “trouble,” the very thirst and longing with which all the works of Pessoa are filled.

This edition is also supplemented by notes and excerpts from the letters of Fernando Pessoa.
