"The Book Written by Sorrow, or the Ascent to Heaven" is the work of an Athonite monk, the elder Simeon. What is "sorrow"? Sorrow is the suffering that the soul of every man must surely undergo at the sacred birth in God, the birth of a new man, a Christian. Often a man is born dead, because his faith is stillborn, that is, born according to the laws of the world and not according to the laws of the Spirit, according to the laws of attachment and not according to the laws of Love. And this is the cause of sorrow, about which Apostle Paul writes: "Out of great sorrow and a troubled heart I wrote to you with many tears, not to grieve you, but that you might know the love that I have for you in abundance" (2 Corinthians 2:4). The holy birth of the new man is not possible without Love, for "out of Love all things are born," and without Love nothing can be born that can be born (cf. Jn. 1, 3). Monk Simeon's book is a treasury of teachings on life itself and the transformation that life must undergo in order to become an authentic life in Christ. Recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
