The reading books in this series are collections of historical stories taken from various sources. These collections were compiled in the process of teaching Russian history in the elementary grades of the Russian Classical School.
The reading books on Russian history are divided into four volumes: the first covers Russian history from the most ancient times to the end of the XV century, the second - from the XVI to the XVIII century, the third - the XIX century, the fourth - the XX-beginning of the XXI century. Each book (volume) consists of two parts (the last one - of three) and is designed for one academic year (two history lessons per week).
The presentation in the Books for Reading is selective and episodic, although the arrangement of texts is in chronological sequence. We use the Books as follows: Book 1 (parts 1 and 2) for first grade study, Book 2 (parts 1 and 2) for second grade study, Book 3 (parts 1 and 2) for third grade study, and Book 4 (parts 1, 2, 3) for fourth grade study. You can also use these Books as supplementary material in middle school (grades 6-9).
The texts are complete fragments or whole works taken from educational (primarily pre-revolutionary) literature, historians' works, works of fiction, biographical prose, memoirs and other sources, a list of which is given at the end of each book. Reproductions of many paintings by the great Russian artists V. M. and A. M. Vasnetsov, M. V. Nesterov, N. K. Roerich, I. Y. Bilibin and others, as well as photographic documents are used as illustrations.
In history, woven from countless events and deeds, a variety of factors - economic, social, political, etc. - are at work. While in modern historical literature the spiritual factor is often given a secondary, subordinate place, in the Books for Reading it is the spiritual state of the people and individuals, their faith that determines the historical movement.
The following methodological principles were used as a basis for the Books for Reading in History:
- the study of the civil, ecclesiastical and spiritual history of Russia as a single inseparable process;
- the spiritual factor is considered to be the leading factor in Russian history;
- imagery and emotional presentation of concrete-historical material are important conditions for the study of history.
The texts of the Books are stories about how the Russian people lived, how our state grew and strengthened, about the selfless, selfless service of Russian people to their Fatherland, about their faith in the high purpose of Russia, about their difficult struggle with internal and external enemies.
