The book's main characters are 12-year-old Yulia and her older brother, Vova.
The story begins with the absent-minded Vova losing his apartment key for the second time in a week. He's afraid to admit it to his father because he'll get punished, so he tries to persuade his sister to help him carry out a cunning plan: he'll skip algebra, take her money, and go to the market to make a duplicate key. He assures his sister that his parents won't find out. Yulia faces a dilemma: lie and save her brother from punishment, or tell their parents everything, which will upset Vova. With these thoughts, the siblings head off to school.
Later, the key is found in Vova's jacket pocket. Yulia is glad she didn't choose to lie to save herself, and life goes on as usual.
The book's heroes and their friends will experience many events, sorrows and joys, and meet a newcomer, Stas, who has moved into their neighborhood. From him, they learn that God is real and hears prayers, and he teaches them to turn to God in difficult times.
And when Stas falls into trouble, his friends unite in prayer for their friend for the first time.
Just as a lost key was discovered in a jacket pocket, so forgotten biblical truths about honesty, God's love, faith, the power of prayer, and helping others are gradually revealed on the pages of the book through the lives of its characters.
