Andrew Walder's book chronicles the rise and fall of the Maoist revolutionary state from 1949 to 1976, an era of astounding achievements and catastrophic failures. In China under Mao, Walder argues, the institutions created during the first decade of Communist Party rule played a major role: a party apparatus that exercised tight control over its cadres and a socialist economy modeled on that of the Soviet Union. Although this authoritarian system was overseen by a national bureaucracy, Mao intervened decisively at every turn. By prescribing continued class struggle against imaginary enemies as a cure for the supposed capitalist restoration, Mao destroyed much of what he had built, and ultimately gave the destroyed no viable alternative.
