In the 1920s, Soviet director and pioneer of documentary cinema Dziga Vertov created a group of filmmakers called "Kinoki". Their main unifying slogan was the fight against any kind of staging on the screen. The director believed that documentary filming reveals a new truth about reality and helps explain the complexity of the world to the average viewer. The group members worked in the epicenter of the chaos of post-revolutionary life: in crowds on the street, in mines and factories, in clubs and pubs. Kinoki often risked their lives, climbing onto rooftops without safety equipment or going underground with miners. Fearlessness was a special pride of the group's cameramen. But already in the 1930s, the experience of Vertov and the kinoks was criticized, and soon the kinoks were forgotten...
How did the fates of the group members turn out: Ilya Kopalin, Ivan Belyakov, Boris Zeitlin, Mikhail Kaufman, Elizaveta Svilova and others? Why did the group break up without even existing for ten years, and why did the discoveries of the kinoks cease to be in demand in the 1930s? Why are the name of Dziga Vertov and his ideas alive and still attract directors, film scholars and those interested in cinema?
These and many other questions are answered by the author of the book - Kirill Goryachok, film historian, teacher, PhD in Philosophy, laureate of the Guild of Film Scholars and Film Critics Award (2020).
