The historical novel Kenilworth was first published in 1821. Its plot tells the story of the tragic affair between the charming beauty Amy Robsart and the ambitious Earl Robert Dudley, the favorite of the great Queen Elizabeth Tudor. Readers will see picturesque images of 16th-century England, the luxurious royal court with its sophisticated intrigues, and the ancient Kenilworth Castle shrouded in mystery. The illustrations for the text were made by French graphic artists Fernand Jacques François Lematte (1850–1929), Diogenes Ulysses Napoleon Maillard (1840–1926), Victor-Armand Poirson (1859–1893), and Edouard Riou (1833–1900). All of these artists share a passion for detailed depictions of costumes, interiors and landscapes, making their illustrations a wonderful complement to Scott's finely written novels.
