The eighth volume is devoted to the history of ancient Rome and other Mediterranean states from the beginning of the Second Punic War to 133 B.C. The main content of this period was the expansion of Roman expansion: having survived a new fierce confrontation with Carthage, the inhabitants of the Eternal City subjugated Cisalpine Gaul and Spain, and at the same time went on the offensive in the eastern direction, entering into a complex and multifaceted conflict with the Hellenistic states. In addition to these clashes, the volume analyzes the internal development of Rome, the Seleucid states, Pergamum, Rhodes, and the Greco-Bactrian and Greco-Indian kingdoms. Separate chapters are devoted to the interaction of Roman and Greek traditions in culture and archaeological sources on the history of Italy in the period under consideration.
