Leonardo Sciascia (1921 – 1989) is a classic of 20th century Italian literature and the founder of a new genre – an intellectual detective story about the mafia. He was the first to open this topic – the omnipotence of the mafia in seemingly prosperous Italy. This book became a sensation: people demanded that it be banned, seeing it as slander against Italian life. Sicilian pharmacist Manno receives an anonymous letter threatening him with death, without giving any explanation of the reasons. The pharmacist’s friends consider the anonymous letter a cruel joke. A complicated investigation begins, led by Professor Laurano. He learns how the mafia holds Sicily in its hands. This is both a thriller and a psychological story. In 1967, the film “To Each His Own” was released, winning dozens of prestigious awards at film festivals. The book should definitely be in the library of anyone interested in classic detective stories.
