Kipling's "Barracks Ballads" are a distinctive part of his oeuvre and a new genre in English literature. Until now, they have not been collected under a single cover, although for many years they were the best known and most widely quoted in the English-speaking world. The first dozen of them appeared in British and American periodicals during 1890 and were later collected in the book "Barracks Ballads and Other Poems" (1892). The second cycle of ballads was included in the collection "Seven Seas" (1896), and the third, related to the Boer War, in the collection "Five Nations" (1903). It was these publications that ensured the ballads' popularity for so many years. What distinguishes Kipling's "Barracks Ballads" from all other army folklore? They are dramatic monologues or casual dialogues that reveal the characters' personalities. Clearly, fictional characters express their feelings and opinions about army life in appropriate language. Among the narrators are heroes and cowards, honest people and swindlers, fools and wise men, and even several women from the military camp—a whole gallery of self-portraits.
