The book by candidate of historical sciences R.N. Evdokimov is devoted to one of the most difficult periods in the history of the Cossacks, which covered the events of the First World War and the initial stage of the Great Russian Revolution. At that time, the contradictions between the traditional Cossack way of life and the emerging new social reality not only questioned the ability of Cossack troops to successfully fulfill combat missions, but also the expediency of the existence of the Cossacks themselves as a special community. Circumstances demanded a profound modernization of the military and administrative structure and socio-economic organization of the Cossacks, as well as the formation of fundamentally new ideas about their place in the state and social system of Russia. This modernization took place relatively smoothly in the Transcaucasian theater of military operations, which was due to its remoteness and the presence there of the largest number of Cossack units and formations, represented by all the major weapons of the time - infantry, cavalry and artillery. This circumstance made the Transcaucasian theater "the most Cossack" in the whole area of the First World War.
