Konstantin Konstantinovich Abaza (1841-1905), writer, officer, taught in military schools, author of a number of training manuals for lower ranks. His essays on the history of the Cossacks were published twice (1890, 1899). The author fascinatingly tells about the origin of the Cossacks, their participation in the most important events from the XVII century to the second half of the XIX century: the defense of Azov, the Seven Years' War, the war with the Polish confederates, the Russo-Turkish, Napoleonic wars, the conquest of the Caucasus, the Turkestan campaigns, cordon service, the founding of new cities - in the total composition of the Russian troops Cossacks have a great merit in the victories of Russia. The book pays attention to the peaceful life of the Cossacks, their customs and trades.
The new edition is supplemented with an introduction, comments and name index by Dr. L.V. Belovinsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences.
