Time of Troubles, or Troubles are called the events of the first Russian civil war in the early 17th century, the severity of which was exacerbated by the intervention in the internal conflict of neighboring states of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden and their seizure of Russian lands. The Troubles was a catastrophe that entailed enormous loss of life, economic devastation and territorial losses. Was the Time of Troubles an accident or was it a natural stage in the development of the Moscow kingdom? What factors led the country to a critical state and what made it possible to overcome the catastrophe? What are the lessons of the Troubles and what prospects were opened during the events of the Time of Troubles? These and other questions are discussed in the book by historian Sergei Shokarev. The author sets himself the task of showing the place and significance of the Time of Troubles in the general course of domestic history. According to his concept, the Time of Troubles was a serious crisis of the first stage of the Russian autocracy. On the one hand, it was a consequence of overstretching of the military-mobilization model created by Ivan III, and on the other hand - the result of distortions of the autocratic system under Ivan the Terrible. At the same time, the events of the Troubles created several alternatives to the autocratic tradition, which were not realized, and the development of the autocratic model continued. Sergey Shokarev is a candidate of historical sciences, a senior researcher at the laboratory of Ancient Russian culture of the School of Actual Humanitarian Studies of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, and the author of a number of scientific and popular science works on the socio-political and cultural history of medieval Russia.
