Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was a prominent Victorian writer, often called the Irish Wilkie Collins and the Irish Edgar Allan Poe. He created Gothic short stories and novels that have won the hearts of generations of readers. "Carmilla" is one of Le Fanu's most famous mystical novels, predating Bram Stoker's "Dracula" by a quarter of a century and having been adapted for film numerous times. The action unfolds in a secluded castle where a wealthy English widower lives with his daughter, Laura. Their peaceful life is disrupted when, by chance, a young lady appears at the castle, and Laura unexpectedly recognizes her as the woman who haunted her childhood nightmare. The story "A Room at the Flying Dragon Inn," also included in this edition, is linked to "Carmilla" by the figure of Dr. Hesselius, one of the first "occult detectives" in literary history, who investigates unusual occurrences, sometimes of a supernatural nature. The mysterious case described in the story is "borrowed" from his practice.
