"Carmilla" is one of the first vampire stories in literary history, written 25 years before Bram Stoker's famous "Dracula," which was inspired by Le Fanu's work.

This story, from the practice of psychiatrist Martin Hesselius, is told by a young girl, Laura, who lives with her father in a castle amid the endless forests of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and leads a solitary life. Everything changes with the arrival of a beautiful stranger named Carmilla, and strange events begin to unfold: peasants die one after another, Laura falls ill and wastes away before her eyes, and nightmares torment her at night. Who is this mysterious Carmilla, and what connection does she have to all this? In addition to this novella, the collection includes other stories by Dr. Hesselius: "Green Tea," "Old Acquaintance," "Judge Harbottle," and "A Room at the Flying Dragon Hotel."
